  7. This file contains information and last minute changes which could not
  8. be included in the manual.

  12. INSTALLATION
  13.  
  14. * This final version of the game now runs completely from the CD. There
  15.   is no installation needed.
  16. * The first time you run the game you will be asked to install
  17.   DirectX 5. If you already have this installed on your system then
  18.   feel free to select 'Cancel'.
  19. * To install DirectX at a later date, open the 'DirectX' folder on the
  20.   CD and double-clike the 'dxsetup.exe' program.

  24. SETUP PRGOGAM
  25.  
  26. * This PC version of EXCALIBUR 2555AD uses a 'Setup' program where you
  27.   can configure the game to run as well as possible on your PC.
  28. * Depending on specification of your computer, not all of the different
  29.   options will be available to you.
  30. * When the game starts for the first time it will automatically select
  31.   the best options for your PC. You should avoid changing these unless
  32.   you really want to...

  34. - 3D MODE -
  35.  
  36.   * This option allows you to select which 3D mode to run the game in.
  37.     The options are:-
  38.  
  39.     * FISH 3D 8 BIT : Suitable for all PC users.
  40.     * D3D SOFTWARE  : This will give you better quality graphics,
  41.               but will only work well on fast MMX 
  42.               processors.
  43.     * 3DFX MODE     : This provides the highest quality graphics,
  44.               but is only available to users with 3Dfx
  45.               accelerator cards.

  47. - LOGIC SPEED -
  48.  
  49.   * This option changes the Frame Rate Independence. It is designed to
  50.     allow the game to run faster on slower PCs.
  51.  
  52.     * 1 - 5 : This is the number of logical game cycles for every
  53.           graphics cycle. The higher the number, the more
  54.           jerky the game will be.
  55.     * Auto  : This mode will select the best FRI for each room you
  56.           enter. In theory it should work the best...
  57.  
  58. - ENHANCED LIGHTING -
  59.  
  60.   * This feature allows you to change the quality of the in-game
  61.     lighting by changing the sub-division on the polygons. This feature
  62.     should only really be used in high spec machines.
  63.  
  64.     * Off        : This should be used on most machines.
  65.     * Silly High : This will slow the game down dramatically, but
  66.                one day machines may be fast enough to use it...
  67.  
  68. - RESOLUTION -
  69.  
  70.   * This option determines what resolution the game will run in. Not
  71.     all graphics cards will support all resolutions. As a general rule
  72.     the lower the resolution, the faster the game will run.
  73.   * In 3Dfx MODE the game will only run in 640x480.

  77. JOYSTICK SUPPORT
  78.  
  79. * Excalibur 2555AD also now includes support for 4 button joypads. This
  80.   is achieved by using part of DirectX. Therefore DirectX 5 must be
  81.   installed on your computer for this to work.
  82. * Due to time constraints, the joystick support has not been completely
  83.   tested. As it was never part of the original design, any joystick
  84.   support should be considered a bonus...

  89. THE MAP SCREEN

  91. * In FISH 3D MODE the map is not as described in the manual. The
  92.   colours stated in the manual will be different for every level in the
  93.   game (in this mode).

  97. 3DFX USERS
  98.  
  99. * Excalibur 2555AD was written to use the latest version the 3Dfx API -
  100.   'Glide'. You may need to update the drivers for your card before you
  101.   can play Excalibur.
  102. * If you run the 'Setup' program and there is no 3Dfx option in the 
  103.   3D MODE section (and you have a 3Dfx card) try the following:-
  104.  
  105.     * Open the folder '3DFX' on the root of the CD.
  106.     * Inside it there is a program called 'g24rtvg.exe'.
  107.     * Double-click on this file to update your drivers.
  108.  
  109. * This program is supplied by 3Dfx Interactive and as such we accept no
  110.   liability for what might happen. It should work fine though...
  111.

  114. SAVE GAMES (STARTING LEVEL)
  115.  
  116. * This PC version of Excalibur does not include a specific save game
  117.   feature.
  118. * Instead, Windows 95 will store the maximum level you have reached so
  119.   that you can start at this, or any of the preceding levels.

  123. SCREEN SIZE
  124.  
  125. * An additional feature was added to the game at the last minute which
  126.   allows you to resize your screen in the FISH 3D & D3D SOFTWARE modes.
  127. * When you are in game, pressing F5 will shrink the screen. This will
  128.   have the advantage of allowing the game to run much faster.
  129. * Pressing F6 will enlarge the screen again.
  130. * There are a number of known problems with this feature:-
  131.  
  132.     * The Pause menu may be slightly corrupted.
  133.     * Objects in the Inventory may be shown incorrectly.

  137. AMMENDMENTS TO THE MANUAL
  138.  
  139. * On page 3 there is an addition to the Standard Controls section:-
  140.  
  141.     * When speaking with another character press CTRL to scroll the
  142.       subtitle text.

  144. * On page 4 there is an addition to the Inventory section:-
  145.  
  146.     * To switch between the different sections of the screen press
  147.       SHIFT or TAB.
  148.  
  149. * On page 5 the paragraph about food should read:-
  150.  
  151.     * Food
  152.       You have a limited amount of health (displayed in the top
  153.           left corner of the screen). WHICH you are able to replenish
  154.       with the aid of food pickups such as fruit, bread or water.
  155.  
  156. * On page 5 there is an addition to the Spell Recipes paragraph:-
  157.  
  158.     * Spell Recipes
  159.       Before spell recipes can be added to your Spell Book you must
  160.       first read them. The items required must them be combined in
  161.       the combinations box.

  165. ALT-TAB
  166.  
  167. * Pressing ALT-TAB during the game to switch to another program may
  168.   cause problems. Both your Energy Bar & Map may become corrupted when
  169.   you return to the game.
  170. * The best solution to this problem is not to press ALT-TAB.
